One of the very first things I tell people when they ask me about our local schools is that they are wonderful. The second thing I mention is that National Fair Housing Laws prohibit Realtors from making recommendations about specific schools. Aside from the good reasons behind this prohibition, there’s a very good reason not to depend on your Realtor for this sort of recommendation: Your ideas of the right education for your child are dependent on your views of education and the special needs of your individual child. I view my job in this area as one which provides parents with absolutely as much information as possible, so they may make an informed decision regarding their child’s education. Here’s the bottom line: There are great private schools and there are great public schools. The trick is finding the school that best fits your child’s needs. It’s a good idea to research the schools that interest you and, to get a true picture of the school, visit in person.
I am constantly looking for resources which help parents make informed decisions. Following are links to invaluable resources on the web, providing you with information about specific schools, their programs, their philosophies, and their test scores. No one source seems to have it all, for every school, so it will take some time on your part to sift through the information. However, I firmly believe that the time invested will pay off remarkably.
I am also a firm believer that no amount of research can replace an in-person visit to the schools you’re considering. I found an excellent article on the GreatSchools.net website which advises on how to Plan an Effective Visit.
When it comes to providing information about our local schools, there are two sources that provide the very best and most complete information:
|
GreatSchools.net GreatSchools.net is an objective source of school information on elementary, middle and high schools. A nonprofit organization, GreatSchools.net provides information about public, private and charter schools
Curry School of Education The presence of the University of Virginia in our community adds a unique dimension to our area schools... It’s remarkable Curry School of Education, has developed such programs as Book Buddies and sponsors the Thomas Jefferson Center for Educational Design.
Here are a few other Quick Links to other interesting programs in the community:
Albemarle County Homeschoolers
Home Educators Association of Virginia
Parent Resource Center Serving families of children in special education in Albemarle, Charlottesville, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Madison Counties.
Light House Your Stories on Screen : Light House is a non-profit, independent, media education center for teenagers who want to make movies with an emphasis on personal expression and local stories.
